Why 'Used Cars Near Me' Ads Fail Most Dealerships
By Shammi
I see the same pattern in almost every dealership account before we start working together: high click volume on "used cars near me," a reasonable click-through rate, and almost nothing to show for it in showroom visits.
The mistake: bidding on the phrase, not the intent
"Used cars near me" is a broad, top-of-funnel search. Someone typing that could be six months from buying. Meanwhile, someone searching "2022 Honda Civic EX price [city]" is often ready to visit this week.
Most dealership accounts spend the majority of budget on the broad phrase and starve the specific, high-intent searches that actually convert.
What actually works
Structure campaigns around inventory, not generic terms. Make/model/trim-specific ad groups outperform generic "used cars" campaigns almost every time, because the ad copy and landing page can match exactly what the searcher typed.
Send traffic to the specific vehicle page, not the homepage. If someone searches for a specific trim, and your ad sends them to your homepage, you've made them do the finding-the-car work themselves. Most won't.
Track calls and form fills separately from clicks. A dealership's real conversion is a phone call or a "check availability" form — not a click. If you're only measuring clicks, your Smart Bidding is optimizing for the wrong outcome.
If your account is heavy on broad "near me" traffic and light on actual showroom visits, that's usually the first thing worth fixing. Book a free strategy call and I'll show you where your budget is actually going.
